The River Shannon divides Lanesborough, in the county of Longford, on the eastern side of the river, with Ballyleague, in county Roscommon, on the western side. Lanesborough held a two day race meeting on Thursday 14th and Friday 15th October 1773 which was deemed sufficiently important for results to be included in the Racing Calendar. On the opening day the Large Silver Cup for hunters was won by Spanker, owned by Mr John Fallon, who got the better of Hawknose, while on the following day a Ladies Plate went to Mr Hanly’s bay gelding Rattle-the-Cash. There are no further records of meetings taking place in the town. |
